Detailed Itinerary

A meaningful ten-day itinerary created to facilitate family bonding through shared African outdoor sporting traditions.

Day 1: Arrival Bushveld

From the moment you land at OR Tambo, your multi-region safari is in motion. We’ll transfer you directly to the Bushveld, giving you plenty of time to settle into camp and immerse the whole family in the untamed beauty of the savanna.

The afternoon is reserved for a collaborative range session, ensuring both hunters are comfortable and accurately zeroed. Once the rifles are calibrated, we embark on an orientation drive through the thornveld. This provides an excellent opportunity to scout for Kudu and Impala sign before your first fireside dinner.

Day 2-5: Hunting Bushveld

These days focus on the "walk and stalk" method through the thick acacia and riverine bush of the Gauteng region. You will work together to spot movement in the dense cover, learning the nuances of wind direction and stealth. It is a period of learning and shared excitement.

Midday is spent back at the lodge, sharing stories over brunch and resting during the peak heat. As the afternoon shadows grow longer, we return to the savanna to target active game near clearings. Evenings are dedicated to reviewing the day's events and the rich history of the hunting lifestyle.

Day 6: Bushveld to Eastern Free State

After a final Bushveld breakfast, we begin the transition toward the sprawling, open grasslands of the Eastern Free State. The changing scenery from dense woods to mountainous horizons is a highlight of the trip. You will arrive at your new camp in time to settle in and explore.

The afternoon involves a brief scouting mission to acclimate to the higher altitude and vast visibility of the central plateau. We focus on identifying the herds of Zebra and Gemsbok that frequent the slopes. This change in environment requires a shift in hunting tactics, which we discuss over dinner.

Hunting in the Free State emphasizes long-range glassing and methodical stalks across open terrain. You will navigate rolling hills and rocky outcrops, testing your patience and fieldcraft against the keen eyes of plains game. The dramatic mountain scenery of the Malutis provides a stunning backdrop for these final days.

Each day is a lesson in persistence, often involving longer walks to secure the perfect position. Between sessions, the lodge offers a comfortable sanctuary to recount the morning’s success. Father and Son Hunting Package FAQs

These FAQs cover how we select hunting areas and camps, what a typical hunting day looks like, and what observers can do during the safari. If you’d like, we can also recommend sightseeing options near camp between morning and afternoon hunts.

Can we share the trophies included?

Yes, this entire package is built for you to share the experience. To simplify your trip and avoid importing multiple firearms, you can both make use of the rifles of your Professional Hunter; the only cost is the ammunition replacement. This allows for a flexible arrangement focused on mentorship and creating shared African memories between the two of you.

Is there a minimum age for the son?

There is no legal minimum age, but we recommend your son is old enough to handle a rifle safely. We can provide you with smaller caliber rifles with low recoil if you use the rifles of your Professional Hunter for the cost of ammunition. This ensures a comfortable and confident start for him as he begins his hunting journey.

How do you handle the competitive spirit?

We focus on ethics, fieldcraft, and your shared experience over the "score." Our guides emphasize teaching you respect for the animal and the nuances of the hunt. We often conclude your safari with a celebratory dinner to recognize the unique achievements and memorable moments shared by both you and your son throughout the ten-day adventure.

What is a typical day like for a hunter?

You will find the day is paced to suit both of you, focusing on mentorship and shared success. You will hunt together with one PH, allowing the father to guide the son through the stalk. Afternoons often involve target practice at the range or learning track identification together before we gather around the evening campfire.

What area activities are available to observers?

Observers are always welcome to follow the hunt and share in the memories. Family-centric activities include you visiting local community projects or rural schools together. Guided "bush walks" focused on smaller wildlife and family-style outdoor lunches also make this a highly inclusive bonding experience, ensuring every member of your family feels fully part of the African adventure.

Species which are available in the Bushveld & Free State

You are welcome to take additional trophies beyond those in your package as opportunities arise. This is subject to the availability of specific species quotas and required permits. Any extra trophies will be charged according to our current list prices.
